Absolutely practical. Would be my choice in fact. In my opinion, gelcoat will greatly outlast paint.
Spray on the smooth areas then double-tape and roll on gel coat mixed with colloidal silica for the non-skid areas. If the guy knows his stuff, go for it. Dennis C.
