Has anyone gone with the electronic flares?
I am driving to Annapolis today to get more SOLAS flares. I could get
the electronic flare for the same money and it would last forever, but I
just cannot make myself do it. They are a clever way to meet the letter
of the law, but I cannot imagine actually succeeding at getting rescued
using one. Flares also do triple duty - they are great for lighting you
and boat up to avoid being run over and also are great fire starters
when you need to get rid of expired ones.
* one of the reasons I doubt the blinking light things is long ago at
night we had an engine issue and needed TowBoatUS to come out. It was a
dark clear windless night and we could see them clear as day. They could
not see us, so we turned on our MOB strobe and they still could not see
us. Seems that kind of thing just gets lost in the shore lights. OTOH a
magnesium white flare lights up half the river :)
