To Tom's question "did you hold the knob in?" the reason why you need to hold the knob in is to allow the thermocouple time to heat up in the heat of the lit burner. Once hot, it stays open and keeps the flame.
As a point of clarity I called it a thermocouple which uses a peltier junction to generate a voltage to hold the valve open. But there is a more primitive means of accomplishing the same effect and that is with a bi-metal valve or temperature sensitive bulb and valve. I'm not sure which technology you'll find but hopefully you have a better idea where to look for solutions.
