Interesting story about my mast replacement. I was motoring from the
Seattle YC to Shilshole Bay Marina. After passing under several bridges
(after calling the bridge operators for an opening) I received a phone
call. There was still a railroad bridge to pass under, but it was usually
kept open, and I wasn't paying attention. While talking on the phone, I hit
the bridge (that was down) and got stuck under it. I had to call the bridge
operator to release me. Fortunately only the very top of the mast got
stuck, although the crash took out my masthead instruments and VHF antenna.
When I got to the moorage, I looked at the top of the mast with binoculars
and didn't see any major damage. The next day I motored down to the Tacoma
YC to spend the night before a race the next day. Two club members hoisted
me up to the top of the mast so I could get a better look. The rigging was
intact, but the cap at the top of the mast was bent up. On race day, the
wind was light, so I figured the rig was strong enough for me to race. As
we crossed the starting line, someone on the committee boat yelled out
"Hey, you're the one who hit my bridge." It was the bridge operator. I
spent the rest of the summer sailing in south Puget Sound, and around the
San Juan and Gulf Islands. I didn't want to have the mast inspected until I
returned to Portland, or my insurance company might have required me to
keep my boat up north until repairs were made.

When I returned to Portland, I had the mast inspected by a surveyor
recommended by the insurance company. The repair estimate was more than my
hull insurance, so the insurance company totaled the boat, and I bought it
back for $5,000. I ended up with a new Selden mast, new standing rigging,
new Harken furler, new Tides Marine Strong Track and a new rudder (which
was leaking water, even before the accident). Most of the cost was covered
by insurance. The Strong Track from the old mast wouldn't fit the new
mast, so I had to buy a new one. If anyone wants to buy the old Strong
Track, in very good condition ($300 US including shipping) message me
directly. I also have spreaders and other parts from the old mast for sale.
