er, you need x to run vnc.
it's an extended `x' desktop. so, yes. you must have x installed to use
vnc. my suggestion, buy a pc, put linux on it -- learn it before you start
messing around in the shell... you might damange something =P
this way you can learn `x' without messing with it on the qube. (you can't
plug a monitor into a qube -- its a server not a workstation)
