Make sure to have an Alias Server for travel.com in addition to the
ServerName www.travel.com 'cause if not, then http://travel.com will go or
default to golf.travel.com. At least that what I experienced on a Raq 4, yet
it might not be the case for you....

Perhaps something like this in the VirtualHost block for the site.
<VirtualHost IP_ADDRESS>
ServerName golf.travel.com
DocumentRoot /home/sites/siteX/web
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^[^.]+\.travel\.com$
RewriteRule ^(.+) %{HTTP_HOST}$1 [C]
RewriteRule ^([^.]+)\.travel\.com(.*) /home/sites/siteX/web/$1$2
</VirtualHost>
