More than likely, you are missing xauth, as Cobalt doesn't include it in their distribution. Locate a copy of xauth for XFree86 3.3.x and put it in /usr/X11R6/bin. That usually does the trick. Of course, to have anything to use it for you need a couple of more pieces of X11 also. I don't remember where I got it, but these are the packages I used:
