I did what most of the howtos say, but no1 seems to have an answer to why
mysql_connect() nor probably any mysql functions, dont work..
Don't know if this is related to your problems, but I recently upgraded PHP on a 550 using the instructions here:

However, I found it was best to for me to replace the "--with-mysql=shared" ./configure argument with, simply: "--with-mysql"
Then the whole MySQL and php.ini thing just fell into place for me
