After further review, it seems the new "enhanced vmxnet" network adapter 
used by VMWare is not supported by the PXE image provided with 
Redhat/CentOS 5.3 which causes the netboot to fail.  The PXE boot starts 
but fails once the image is loaded and tries to bring up the network device.

The "flexible" adapter still works.
