Many thanks to Duane Nelson for clarifying access to the Tempel Ranch, which has been known to some as "Tony's Grove." I think Duane's phone call was a much-needed public service both for landowners and for birders, and both will benefit from the information.
I just wanted to point out that Gayle and Melody Tempel were kind enough to allow their ranch to be included on the Colorado Birding Trail. Most private ranches on the Birding Trail charge admission, but the Tempels have been very open about allowing free access. Nonetheless, they did originally say that visiting birders might consider making a donation when they visit, and I think that would be a great idea. Please do consider stopping by to meet them and to give them a small token of your appreciation when you stop by. And definitely make a point to stop by--the habitat is marvelous! Those who attended the CFO convention in La Junta a few years ago may remember the Prothonotary Warbler and Vermilion Flycatcher that were both found at this location on convention field trips. The ranch is in extreme NE Bent County, very close to the Great Plains Reservoirs and to Lamar.
