Dear Cobirders,
While it's not so surprising to see a White-breasted Nuthatch in
Rocky Mountain National Park, it is surprising to see one on the
summit of Spearhead (Boulder County) (yes, the actual ity-bity summit
block at 12,575'). This is an especially high-altitude record but it
is all the more surprising given that there isn't any vegetation in
any direction from the summit of the Spearhead for quite some
distance. The bird appeared to be gleaning spiders and other bugs
from in between the rocks. This is the time of year that birds head
up to the alpine. In the past two weeks I've also had sightings of
Northern Flicker well above treeline ( > 12,500' eating ants on
glacial till in Lincoln Amphitheater, Park County) and last year at
about this time I found a Lark Bunting on Guanella Pass (Clear Creek
County).

Cheers,
Walter Szeliga
