On Friday, starting about 9 am, I observed and photographed large group of
Ptarmigan on Mt. Evans. I personally did not count the number in the group
but one photographer said he tallied 16. Another claimed 18. Regardless of
the accuracy, I have never encountered that many at one time hanging out
together. They seemed to be somewhat unconcerned about the presence of
people and more on eating. At times they were as close to 10 feet away. If
any are interested in the location, they were on the on the east side of the
slope below the Crest House and Observatory. Just as you exit the second
sharp bend before the top pull off and scour the mountainside that is to you
right and up to the top.
