Dad and I spent some time in the lower Dolores Canyon today (between Bradfield Bridge and the dam), where he birded and I fished. On the way back, we kept east as much as possible, and discovered a single sharp-tailed grouse sitting by the side of the road near the junction of DD and 21, near the south rim of the canyon. Our first thought was hen pheasant, but then there was the crest, and the eye stripe, and the white pattern on the back... I have seen lots of sharpies in Montana, even shot and ate a couple many years ago, but this is the first one I have seen in Colorado.
Not very afraid of us, it finally wandered off into the grass. By the time I realized a photo was in order (I wasn't going to take one of a pheasant), it was already headed into the sunset. Next trip, maybe. Quite a surprise for us, and another county bird for Dad.
