With the heavy snow up here near Red Feather Lakes (18 inches and still coming
down heavily at 11 am), the juncos have descended in droves to our feeders.
Over the past couple of weeks the occasional Oregon Junco has joined our
Colorado Gray-headeds. But with the snow, we now have at least two dozen very
handsome Oregons at our feeders. We also have at least two and perhaps a few
more White-winged Juncos with their flashy extra white tail feathers and their
slightly larger size. The Gray-headeds are far fewer than a couple of days
ago, and my sister reported this morning that she had her first juncos at her
feeders in southeast Fort Collins, so perhaps they have moved downslope. Other
birds at our feeders include a sizeable number of Pine Siskins, a few Cassin's
Finches and Mountain Chickadee.
