Cobirders,
Bob Bonestroo and I made a quick stop this morning at Big Johnson Reservoir on
our way to Chico Basin Ranch but didn't see anything unusual. It was windy and
drizzly. We stopped again in the afternoon and did see a FOY Clark's Grebe very
close to the parking lot near the dam We also saw many Western, a few Horned
and one Eared Grebe and as usual the many waterfowl species, including
Red-breasted Mergansers. Also quite a few swallows (Barn, Tree, Violet-green,
Northern Rough-winged and Cliff). Along Goldfield Road below the dam we saw
White-faced Ibis and many Franklin's Gulls in the irrigated fields; also a
covey of Scaled Quail.
We got skunked on the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron at Fountain Creek Regional
Park early this morning, but saw it easily around 2:30 this afternoon.
Chico Basin was also good. With the help of David Chartier and Brandon
Percival we saw the Northern Parula warbler and Hooded Warbler at the Holmes
Place. What splendid birds! We easily refound the Hooded later in the day
still in the woods at the bird banding station. We also saw Myrtles and
Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
and Cedar Waxwings. At the headquarters pond we saw several shorebirds,
Marbled Godwits, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary Sandpiper, Stilt
Sandpiper, Western Sandpiper, White-faced Ibis, the usual waterfowl and quite a
few swallows. With Bill Maynard's directions we found two Burrowing Owls and a
Mountain Plover. In all we saw over 80 species; aside from the wind, we had an
enjoyable birding day.
Good Birding,
Ken Pals
