Tundra Swan (Jackson) Merlin (Logan) White-winged Dove (Las Animas) Chihuahuan Raven (*Larimer) Carolina Wren (Pueblo) Curve-billed Thrasher (*Jefferson) Nashville Warbler (El Paso, Larimer) Black-throated Blue Warbler (Larimer) Swamp Sparrow (El Paso, Logan) White-throated Sparrow (*Jefferson, Pueblo) Golden-crowned Sparrow (*Jefferson) El Paso County: -- An adult male Nashville Warbler was reported by Drummond in willows adjoining Monument Creek near Palmer Lake Reservoir Trail on October 22. -- A Swamp Sparrow was banded at the Clear Springs Ranch on October 23, reported by Diane Luck. Jackson County: -- A Tundra Swan was seen on October 21 and 22 at the Arapahoe National Wildlife Refuge at pond 76 and later at Elk Pond, on the auto tour. Thanks to Carol Hunter for this report. Jefferson County: -- A Golden-crowned Sparrow continues at the Red Rocks, as does a White-throated Sparrow, both seen on October 27th. --A CURVE-BILLED THRASHER, most rare in Jefferson County, was found by Chavez in mid-afternoon on October 27 at the Red Rocks Trading Post, then seen again by him and Henwood between 5 and 5:30 PM. Each of the birds at Red Rocks can be on or under any of the two feeders or in nearby bushes. Patience is required, as some time can go by between appearances. Lake County: --Kalbach reports a Brown Thrasher, a first county record, on October 23, at the Mount Elbert Forebay. Larimer County: --On October 23 in Lake Estes Leatherman found a female Black-throated Blue Warbler and two Nashville Warblers, at least one of which was a "western" Nashville. From the visitor center take the Lake Estes Trail to crab apple trees between the trail and the fence around the power plant's utility yard. One of the Nashvilles was seen again on October 24th. -- Wild saw a CHIHUAHUAN RAVEN, rare in Larimer, fly over Tinmath Reservoir on October 27.. Las Animas County: -- In Trinidad Pat Snider saw a White-winged Dove on October 25 in his yard at 1200 Santa Fe Trail, which is at the corner of Jefferson and Santa Fe Trail. Birders are welcome to comb the neighborhood in search of the dove. Logan County: -- Tina Jones found a Swamp Sparrow near the trail below the east end of the dam at Prewitt Reservoir on October 24th. It was seen at the edge of a cattail marsh. On October 24th she also saw at least two Merlins (Prairie) along Road 25, just north of Prewitt Reservoir. Pueblo County: --A vocal Carolina Wren was reported by Silverman in Colorado City about 100 yards west of the Sewage Treatment Plant on October 22, and a White-throated Sparrow was at the east end of the plant. The plant is at the south end of Applewood Trailer Park and accessed from CO 165 just west of its junction with I-25. DFO field trips for the weekend: Saturday, October 30: The DFO field trip is to McCabe Meadows Park, formerly known as Parker Regional Park. The leader is Buzz Schaumberg (303) 699-1721. Meet Buzz at 0730 at the Nature Center. To get there from the Main Street intersection in Parker, go south on Parker Road (CO83) for 1.2 miles, then turn right on Indian Pipe Lane to a parking lot of the right. This will be a half day trip. Please call Buzz if you plan to go. Sunday, October 31: The DFO trip is to the Carson Nature Center and South Platte Park, led by Mary Keithler (303) 771-1421. Meet at 0800 for a half day trip. Lunch is optional. Halloween costume is optional. It;s Halloween so let's see what can be scared up.
