Today, after seeing 11 evening grosbeaks at Fawn Brook (and 0 Rosy Finches),
we traveled to Wild Basin, where, at about 10:30 AM, a Northern Pygmy Owl
popped up into the dead tree to the right of the bathrooms in the parking
area. He moved over into a tree just beside the Sandbeach Lake Trailhead
(between the parking lot and the little kiosk on the trail. He was intently
staring at the area near a woodpile just off of the trail, and was not
perturbed by hikers walking just below him. The lone Tundra Swan was
peddling fiercely in the SE corner of Valmont Reservoir, where 3 canvasbacks
and a mallard also tried to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
