Not the most unusual bird to see in the Denver area during winter, but
they've recently shown up in my yard in larger numbers and with greater
regularity than I can remember ever seeing before. I live in the SE Denver
suburbs, near the intersection of Arapahoe Road and Holly Street.

It all started on Wednesday, February 2nd, one of those very cold days
when the high temperature wasn't much above zero. We'd seen hardly any
American goldfinches all winter, just a stray passing through once in a great
while. That day five of them showed up and absolutely hammered my little
thistle feeder. What a surprise to see it half-empty in the mid-afternoon!
They came back the next day and the day after that, and every day since.
Then, this past Thursday, there were suddenly ten of them! And there have
been ten of them every day since. They are here irregularly throughout the
day; sometimes 2 or 4, sometimes 8 or 10. The males are definitely coming
into their breeding plumage.
