Hey birders,

Forrest Rowland and I surveyed many of the hot spot areas in the southeast
yesterday. Although migrants were few and far between here are some of the
birds we had.

Lesser Prairie-Chickens- 17 birds on the Cimmaron National Grasslands
One our way back from the chickens we took Hwy 51 (KS) or known as CR M in
Colorado (Baca Co.) we had 4 different sightings of Mountain Plover with at
least 8 birds over a 15 mile stretch. These birds occured with really no effort
as we did not spend significant time panning fields to find them. Some were
were doing their flight display. Also, on the same road we had multiple
Long-billed Curlews in KS and CO.

Two Buttes SWA is just starting to bloom out, but this place looks like a
wonderful migrant trap in another 10-14 days. The only birds on note we had
were 1 Audubon's Warbler, 2 Hermit Thrushes and multiple Brown Thrashers

Walsh Sewage Ponds provided three teal species, Northern Pintail, Northern
Shoveler, Gadwall, American Widgeon, Ruddy Duck and Mallards. Not too bad for
minature ponds that takes less than 4 minutes to drive around.

Over in Prowers Co. we visited Laky Hasty and John Martin reservoir. Lake Hasty
was the most productive with multiple waterfowl species, Caspian Tern, a
handful of American-White Pelicans, Marbled Godwit, both yellowlegs sp., Hooded
and Common Mergs, etc. California and Ring-billed Gulls were found on the south
shore of John Martin. Can't wait to get back down to this area in two weeks or
so. Should be exciting birding!
