I returned to Temple Grove along the Ft Lyon Canal north of Lamar this morning as I thought I likely missed one or more neotropical migrants yesterday. I was rewarded by finding what looked like a female American Redstart--but it was singing. While I have read that female American Redstarts do sometimes sing, it seems more likely that this is an immature male--but I will have to go into all that tomorrow as it is very late. I also found a Wilson's Warbler which makes a new total of 9 warbler species at this superb hotspot.
While I was at Temple Grove, Stephanie Jones and her friend arrived. I had refound the Mourning Warbler earlier and showed them where he was skulking and they were later able to see him. I also refound the Magnolia Warbler while with them so they were able to see this beauty also. I subsequently saw a Northern Waterthrush further east along the canal while they saw one closer to the road so they are apparently 2 Northern Waterthrush at Temple Grove. I had a brief look at the Chestnut-sided Warbler so he is also still around. Stephanie's friend (sorry, I should have wrote his name down) found a male American Redstart that was signing so there are 2 American Redstarts at Temple Grove. Most of the other birds I noted yesterday were still there today. Another species I failed to report last night is Lincoln's Sparrow--I saw at least 5 different Lincoln's in about a quarter mile along the canal at this location--another well represented species. I also forgot to mention at least one Northern Mockingbird, dozens of Western Kingbirds, 1 Eastern Kingbird, Chipping Sparrows, American Goldfinch, American Robins (fewer than Swainson Thrush!), very few Starlings, a few House Finch and House Sparrows---an extremely birdie area. I have uploaded one very good photo I got yesterday of the Magnolia Warbler when it had flown directly above and close to me--came out so good I didn't need to crop it or do any editing.
