I went up to Horsetooth Reservoir today west of Ft. Collins with some
friends and explored the South Bay area while they did all the beach & water
activities. We parked at the Day Use Area (beach area) along the west shore.

I walked north along the shore for a ways and eventually turned left and
headed up to the top of the small ridge west of the beach; right near the
top I heard an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER at about 1:15pm. I was eventually
able to see the bird as it flew north along the ridge. I had left the camera
in the car, of course, but I was able to record its call with my iPhone. The
exact coordinates were 40.5205º, -105.156337º - altitude: 5,713 ft.

I bushwhacked down to the car and retrieved the camera but didn't refind the
bird; however, I did get some pix of a single BUSHTIT in one of the two
draws that come down to the water just north of the beach. These draws lead
up to where the flycatcher was, but the terrain is not easy to traverse if
you go this way.

Upon returning to Ft Collins I did a little research and found David
Steingraeber's posts from this May and from previous years reporting
Ash-throated Flycatcher from near his property just west of the South Bay
area, so I probably found one of his birds.

Other birds around included Yellow-breasted Chat, Mountain Bluebird, Western
Tanager and a small flock of waxwings.

Good birding-
