Join Governor John Hickenlooper at Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory's annual BBQ for the Birds on Saturday, August 27. He will cut the ribbon at 11 a.m. to celebrate the grand opening of RMBO’s Environmental Learning Center (ELC) at the Old Stone House at Barr Lake. "The Big Year" author Mark Obmascik will also be at the BBQ to share stories about writing the book and making the movie of the same name, starring Jack Black and Steve Martin, to be released on October 14.
Festivities run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning with bird walks and bird banding, followed by workshops on backyard habitat, conservation, live raptors, face-painting, music, a silent auction and more. Brighton Depot will serve lunch at noon. "The new Learning Center will show people what they can do in their own backyards to create healthy habitats for birds - and themselves," said Kacie Ehrenberger, RMBO's Director of Education. "We want kids, families and adults to come here to connect with nature and have fun." The ELC will feature a classroom, an outdoor amphitheater, trails with interpretive signs and demonstration gardens. Please register for the event at www.rmbo.org/blog or by contacting kelly.thomp...@rmbo.org or at 303 659-4348, ext 12. Register by August 19 for a $1 discount per person. Admission at the door is $10 for RMBO members, $12 for non-members and $6 for ages 5-12. Admission includes lunch and all activities. RMBO's Old Stone House is at 14500 Lark Bunting Lane through the new north entrance to Barr Lake State Park off Bromley Lane just east of Brighton. Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory is a Colorado-based nonprofit that works to conserve birds and their habitats from Montana into Mexico through science, education and stewardship. Even if you cannot attend, please go to RMBO.org to see what we have been up to lately. This event keeps getting bigger and better each year, so plan to come, bring a friend and I'll see you there!
