Last week end I crused past Union Reservoir to check whether grebes
successfully bred there this year. There were >500 Aechmophorus grebes in
east-central portions of the reservoir, at least 30 or 40 with young, some
quite small. I'm not sure how management of the water has changed, but
prior to the last 3 or 4 years breeding of Western/Clark's grebes at
Union was irregular at best. High water in summer has been poor for
shorebirds but apparently beneficial to these breeding species.

Nearby, I also saw a single Western with 2 young on the gravel pit pond east
of the St.Vrain and north of Highway 119.
