I birded San Luis Lake last Thursday and the water level is so low that many carp have died. This banquet of sushi is not unnoticed by a vast amount of birds. Ring-billed and California Gulls were feasting. Other birds present included Sanderlings, Baird's Sandpipers, Common Loon, Long-billed Curlews, Forsters tern, Bonaparte Gull and even an unusual Cassin's Kingbird. The coyotes were also enjoying the bounty and no less that 5 were seen at lakes edge.
At Smith reservoir SWA, the water is low also and had Marbled Godwit, Stilt and Bairds sandpipers, and many other waterbirds. Sand Hill Cranes are showing up in good numbers now. Monte Refuge and the agricultural fields around the Valley are good places to find them.
