Like Karl Stecher I live in the west end of Centennial, and like Karl I
get regular visits from bushtits throughout the year. I estimated this
morning's flock between 12 and 2,481. Sometimes an hour or so after a flock
moves through I get another wave, and I wonder if there are several flocks in
this area. There've been days I've had four waves go through, of course
there are many days I see none.

A couple of blue jays were haranguing for peanuts this morning so I threw
a handful onto the deck, pretty much directly below them. The holes in the
snow where the nuts landed were quite visible, depth of the snow was about
2 inches. A jay dropped down about a foot from where the nuts had landed
and started shovelling snow by sweeping his head through it side-to-side,
but as he moved about he never moved towards the holes where the nuts were
and consequently didn't find any. He finally gave up and flew away, joined
by his buddies.

And as a final note for this snowy morning, the quiet around the feeders
earlier this morning was explained by my wife, who'd been up a while before
me: "Your buddy was here this morning"; my buddy being an adult male
sharp-shinned who's been patrolling the neighborhood lately.
