Hello, Birders.

Well! It's minus 13 Celsius in Boulder County as I type, with light snow and
freezing drizzle. I sure could go for some Hepatic Tanagers and Grace's
Warblers right about now. I'd love to see a Rufous-crowned Sparrow or a Gray
Vireo. I'd even settle for a singing Eastern Phoebe or a displaying Long-billed
Curlew. Most of all, I think I could go for a scrumptious barbecue right about
how!

Well, it ain't gonna happen this morning.

But all that and more will indeed happen at the COLORADO FIELD ORNITHOLOGISTS'
2012 BIRDING CONVENTION IN TRINIDAD, LAS ANIMAS COUNTY, MAY 17TH-MAY 20TH.

The theme of our 2012 birding convention could be "The Best of Both Worlds" or
perhaps "Have Your Cake and Eat it Too." Let me explain.

Each year, the CFO board of directors is faced with a challenge when it comes
to the matter of selecting a site for CFO's annual birding convention: Do we go
for a big urban center with great amenities? Or do we go for a smaller site,
with fewer amenities, but potentially more exciting birding? Well, in 2012, we
get it all! On the one hand, the tourism infrastructure in Trinidad is
excellent; if you haven't been there in a few years, you'll be well impressed
by all the changes. On the other hand, Trinidad is the gateway to thrilling
birding adventures in rugged Las Animas County and beyond. Field trips will
take us to spectacular private ranches in south-central Colorado, and we have
several special trips lined up for northern New Mexico.

The potential to find very rare birds is great. Even if we don't find a
mega-rarity (Bendire's Thrasher, anyone? perhaps Colorado's first White-tailed
Kite, Cactus Wren, or Verdin?), it is a GUARANTEE that we will enjoy glorious
birding, over-the-top spectacular scenery, and wonderful human company.

There's more than just birding. Our keynote speaker will be Prof. Brian D.
Linkhart, from Colorado College. Prof. Linkhart is the world's expert on
Flammulated Owls, and he will speak to us about "Large-scale Secrets of
Pint-sized Raptors: Shedding Light on Climate Change Effects and Migration
Patterns in Flammulated Owls." Nathan Pieplow will be moderating an outstanding
scientific paper session; Nathan will also moderate the fun, educational, and
quite evil birdsong ID quiz. And much, much more.
