Hi All,

Threw some seed out early and watched the feeders for an hour until about 8:30 a.m. Did not see the Golden-crowned Sparrow, although the 1st year White-crowned Sparrow put in an appearance. Often the two of them
show up at the feeders about the same time.

Visited the backside of Ship Rock and was rewarded with two Peregrine Falcons (PEFA) calling to each other and doing some aerial maneuvers. One of the Peregrines (the male?) has been present since March 10, when it was seen by Bob Santangelo. I last visited Red Rocks on Thursday, March 15, and their was only one Peregrine. The Raven(CORA) is still sitting on her nest and her mate often calls to her, while sometimes perching on a juniper snag on the hillside to the west. The back side of Ship Rock is accessed by parking in the Upper South Parking Lot, then walking to the extreme west end of the parking lot (handicapped parking) and looking at the cliff to your north.

The Prairie Falcons were together and are using Cave Rock and Frog Rock for their courting behavior. Several times the female flew into a possible eyrie site, stayed a short while before flying out and perching elsewhere. There is also a pair of American Kestrels just to the south of Cave Rock (near where the road forks). If you enter Red Rocks Park at Entrance 3 off Highway 74 to Evergreen, then take the first right (American Kestrels), Cave Rock is on your right and Frog Rock is on the left and road goes between the two large rock formations.

For comparison,
3-13-11 PRFA performing courtship rituals on the back side of Ship Rock; PEFA hadn't arrived; Pair of Common Ravens visiting nest site #2. 3-12-12 PRFA pair using Cave Rock; one PEFA using ship Rock; CORA sitting in nest #1, which was used two years ago.

3-18-11 PEFA pair reported at Ship Rock; PRFA pair moved to Cave Rock; CORA on nest #2. 3-19-12 PEFA pair reported at ship Rock; PRFA pair using Cave Rock; CORA on nest #1.
