It has been tough sledding in Lamar (Prowers) since last Sunday, mostly because
when it's over 90 degrees, snow melts, and sleds don't work all that well. It
is VERY dry down here but, surprisingly, the vegetation (very advanced for the
season) looks pretty good.

Best birds in the Lamar area so far have been:
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (imm. male at Fairmount Cemetery on 4/23 and 4/24)
Summer Tanager (f at Jane Stulp's farmyard about 5 miles south of town just w
of US287 on 4/24, thanks Jane, private)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (3 FOY at Stulp's on 4/24)
Northern Cardinal (2m at Lamar Community College on 4/25)
Red-bellied Woodpecker (seen at Willow Creek Park and LCC 4/23-25)
Bufflehead (1m in a little pond northeast of town)

Other Comments:
no unusual warblers
no vireos
no flycatchers other than Western Kingbirds
no buntings
very few sparrows
(this same week in 2010 I had 135 species in the Lamar area, this trip so far
after three full days I am at 70!)

Eastern Phoebe (singing at Tempel Grove near the county road bridge both 4/22
and 4/24)
Wood Duck (1m at Tempel Grove)

Assortment of common shorebirds (including 4 Snowy Plovers) at Nee Noshe Res
(Kiowa) on 4/23)

Drove around in the area of the reported Harris's Hawk south of Holly (Prowers)
today and did not see it.

Redhead duck in the Arkansas River at Coolidge, KA seemed a bit odd.

The weather is supposed to change a bit in the next few days. Hopefully the
dam will break and migrants will filter in.
