COBirders, I along with Bob Bonestroo and Brad Tyler birded Big Johnson Reservoir/Blue Stem Prairie Open Space, the pond east of Fountain along Squirrel Creek Road and a few places in Fountain Creek Regional Park yesterday morning. We saw 77 species, but few passerines.
Highlights at Big Johnson included five grebe species. At least 4 Clark's and 50 or more Westerns. Nine days ago there were a hundred or more Horned Grebes, yesterday hardly any. Instead there were a hundred or more Eared Grebes. We were surprised to see two Sandhill Cranes on the northeast side of the reservoir. We also say one Common Loon, one McCown's Longspur, one Burrowing Owl, one Marbled Godwit, one Forster's Tern, and one Golden Eagle. A few peeps were on the eastern shore, but too far away for id. Also 7 White-faced Ibis. Highlights at the small stock pond along Squirrel Creek Road included six Least Sandpipers, one Spotted Sandpiper and one probable Glossy Ibis in a group of 45 White-faced Ibises. Fountain Creek had few migrants: one Orange-crowned Warbler, one Yellow-rumped Warbler and one Yellow Warbler. Other than that it was pretty slim. This morning I spend an hour or so at Biedleman Environmental Center / Sonderman Park with Steve Getty. Highlights were the 6-7 Yellow-rumped Warblers and what we believe was a bunting species calling. Other than that it was the expected residents including several House Wrens. Hoping for great birding over the next three weeks. Ken Pals Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
