I spent 5PM-8PM Mon 5/7 at Cherry Creek State Park. Full cloudy skies and
occasional sprinkles made it fairly dark early on.
Most notable - one white-rumped sandpiper at the west side marina.
Other birds (no rarities, just comments for migration/nesting status
update): Also along the west shore - one least, four spotted sandpipers.
Shorebirds at the "diggings" at Cottonwood Creek (should be a good area once
completed) - 8 dowitchers (all seemed to be long-billed) which flew up and
away after about ten minutes; two lesser yellowlegs. My only killdeer was to
the south side of the park road at that locaton. Two male shovelers also at
Cottonwood.
Kestrel near the marina; probably nesting.
200+ ring-billed (only ones I saw), about a third less than full adult, on
the east side.
Snipe to the west side of the woods where Cherry Creek itself crosses the
main road.
Bullock's orioles are back.
And I know from this past weekend there that the black-chinned
hummingbird(s?) has returned, and great horned owlets are present.
I likely missed many species because of the time of day, coolness, and
approaching dark.
I didn't see the Caspian tern.
