This morning I had 3 singing Ovenbirds along the Gold Camp Path at Stratton Open Space. The area was quite lively with expected birds, including a Cooper's Hawk, Prairie Falcons, numerous Western Wood- Pewees, a Cordilleran Flycatcher, Plumbeous Vireos, a Wilson's Warbler, and Black-headed Grosbeaks.
Certainly, it was a far more rewarding spot for birding than Sondermann Park has been this spring. It has been uncannily, depressingly inactive every time I've been over there, almost as if a neutron bomb had been set off that somehow left behind only vultures, cowbirds, and House Wrens. Slight exaggeration -- but only slight. My hypothesis is that the work being done along Fountain/Monument Creek is discouraging migrants from advancing up to Mesa Creek (which runs through Sondermann). If anyone would like to comment on the merit of that idea or offer an alternative hypothesis, please email me.
