I had a meeting tonight in Pueblo so left a little early and stopped by
Holcim Wetlands on the way to see if the Bohemian Waxwings might be back
sallying after aerial insects on this very warm afternoon (72 F). I did
not find any waxwings in the trees or shrubs along the Arkansas River where
I found them yesterday and only a couple of robins. I continued walking
the trail around the wetland pond until I found a number of robins just off
the trail west of the wetland pond. I could hear robins calling and likely
a Spotted Towhee but no waxwing calls but I searched each bird movement
until I spotted a waxwing then another then another. They were feeding,
and doing so quietly, in the Russian Olive trees along with the robins. I
finally located 2 Bohemian and 2 Cedar Waxwings eating Russian Olive fruit
about 50 feet off the trail. BTW, I forget to note that yesterday when I
found the flock of about 12 that were fly-catching they were not calling
then either.
