Seven people joined me today for some early spring birding in eastern
Colorado. A few interesting notes:

1) Very few trees are budding in the Limon and Last Chance areas.

2) Prewitt Reservoir and Crow Valley Campground were almost birdless AND the
trees look like winter.

Loggerhead Shrikes seemed to be evenly spread over the entire eastern
portion of the state with perhaps 20 see today!

We found only TWO House Wrens out east, both at Last Chance. Also at the
"remodeled" birding area behind the Last Chance rest area we found a Field
Sparrow. By the Motel we found a Common Poorwill and a Wilson's Snipe (no
water near the Motel)!

Best shorebird habitats are the ponds south of US34 and east of Kersey, CO.
The ponds are on the east and west side of Weld County Road 57. Birds here
today included: Long-billed Dowitcher, Black-necked Stilt, Greater and
Lesser Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper, MANY Wilson's Phalarope, and MANY ducks
as well as some nice full breeding plumaged Eared Grebes.

Another good place for shorebirds is Loloff Reservoir (NE corner of Weld
County Roads 50 & 55). Many of the same shorebirds, but also a single
Semipalmated Sandpiper, a Willet, and a Long-billed Curlew.

Lastly, Weld County Road 48 (west of Road 49) along the sound side of Lower
Latham Reservoir. This area had a number of ducks and a few shorebirds, but
this location had the BEST shorebird. A near breeding plumage American
Golden Plover! The bird was on the eastern most pond on the south side of
the road. Also seen here were two adult Bald Eagles near a VERY large nest
(east side of the main reservoir), and a Great Egret.

The only flycatchers seen today were Say's Phoebes (lots) and an Eastern
Phoebe at a Platte River crossing northwest of Prewitt Reservoir. There
seems to be something holding MANY migrant species further south. Sparrows
were almost non-existent today.

Things should break in the next few days.
