Hi All, While the Cortez birding festival is still in progress, I'll pass along a few notable sightings. On 5/9 Totten Reservoir had 22 Forster's Terns in the morning that increased to 32 at 7 PM - the highest number I've seen on the West Slope. Also, present in the evening was a single American White Pelican that appeared to be a first year bird and it stayed into the next day. There was a somewhat late Common Loon at Narraguinnep Reservoir that was molting into alternate plumage. On Friday our tour group was treated to four Black Terns at the Dolores Ponds on the eastern end of McPhee Reservoir. Also present at the ponds were high numbers of Ring-billed, Franklin's, and Bonaparte's Gulls.
The Friday trip up Madden Peak Road at the border between La Plata and Montezuma Counties found two male Dusky Grouse, but missed Purple Martins at their small colony at the top which may have been disturbed by recent logging in the area. Shorebirds on my two trips included: American Avocet, Greater Yellowlegs, Willet, Least Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher, and Wilson's Phalarope.
