Birders,
The male Ruby-throated Hummingbird was at my feeder in Las Animas (Bent
County) again at 3:18 this afternoon. It is interacting with the other
two hummingbirds in my yard, both presumably Black-chinned Hummingbird
females or immatures. You are welcome to visit providing you call or
email me in advance. Unlike in the mountains, my hummingbirds flee when
I approach my windows or approach too closely, and you will want to keep
some distance. If you contact me in advance and I'm not here, stand by
my driveway and wait for the hummingbirds to approach my feeder, not
visible from East 6th Street. The male Ruby-throated has that low hum in
flight that identifies it as a male hummingbird, and awareness of this
sound may be most helpful.
I went to Lamar for work this morning, and connected with Janeal
Thompson. Riverside Cemetery was "dead". The High School Grove had a
Great-Crested Flycatcher. Lamar Community College had one small flock of
warblers, including a female Tennessee. Tempel Grove in NE Bent County
had an immature American Redstart, two Great-crested Flycatchers and a
flock of Wild Turkeys. I hadn't been there since spring. Gale Tempel has
done an extraordinary job commemorating his late wife Melody. There are
park benches, plantings, and ornamental work done in her honor, which
will make birders feel absolutely welcome. Thank him if you see him for
the work he has done reaching out to the birding community.
The white-morph Reddish Egret put on yet another amazing show at
Verhoeff Lake this afternoon. Email me if you want help seeing this
bird, as it is on private property.
Beware of chiggers, especially at LCC.
