This week I have enjoyed watching a lot of warblers feeding in and near Canon City. Earlier this past week there were large numbers of Wilson's Warblers on the Canon City Riverwalk between Sell's Lake and Raynold's trailheads. There were at least 50 Wilson's Warblers in just two patches of common reeds that are located in the park between the bluff and river trails which is likely watered by underground streams off the Arkansas River. There were a couple of Orange-crowned and one MacGillivray's Warblers also in the reeds. As soon as the weather from all the intense rain cleared, these warblers appeared to move on.
Day before yesterday and today I birded Red Canyon Park which is about 8 miles north of Canon City. Though primarily pinyon-juniper habitat there are some nice deciduous trees,including about 8 hackberries, in a normally dry gulch that drains the area. Today I had at least 25-35 Townsend's Warblers, 20-25 Yellow-rumped, 10-15 Wilson's, a few Orange-crowned, 1 MacGillivray's (in the trees) and 1 Virginia's Warblers in 3 large hackberry trees. Day before yesterday there were mostly Wilson's along a number of with first-of-the-season Yellow-rumps, and a few Townsend's and Orange-crowned Warblers. I also had some Pinyon Jays in Red Canyon Park both days and I saw 5-6 of them today. Today I heard a late male Broad-tailed Hummingbird there. Other birds that I also saw in the hackberry's were at least 3 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Chipping Sparrows, 1 Blue Jay (surprise to see this species here), and a Northern Flicker. Other birds in the park included at least 5-6 Pinyon Jays, several Western Scrub Jays, Spotted Towhee, many Townsend's Solitaire, a Common Raven.
