Little Blue Heron in Eastern Boulder County/Southwestern Weld County area
On Sunday July 19th Petrea Mah observed a Little Blue Heron in a restricted
area in eastern Boulder County near Boulder Creek. Petrea identified one adult
Little Blue Heron as well as two possible immature birds that were seen only in
flight.
It is of interest that eBird has multiple, "north-metro" records Little Blue
Heron in June or July over the past decade. Four individuals were reported
multiple times in multiple eBird locations in 2005, 2009, 2012 and 2014. The
2012 individual was along the S. Platte near 88th St. The other three
individuals were all in Boulder County at Walden or Teller ponds, basically.
The 2009 and 2012 birds were in June, the other two in July. The 2012 and 2014
birds were both adults. The others probably were as well, but the age is not
recorded in eBird.
Observers should be on the lookout for Little Blue Heron(s) along Highway 52
near Boulder Creek, in the wetlands along Boulder Creek along Weld County Road
16.5, at Panama Reservoir, at St. Vrain State Park, and the Firestone Gravel
Ponds.
