Hi While birding at Crow Valley today I heard a nuthatch sound that confused me- was it a variation of the Red-breasted or a variation of White-breasted? The White-breasted would be the expected nuthatch but the way the Red-breasted has recently been motoring around to locations where it hadn’t been known before, I became doubtful which one I was hearing. Unfortunately the nuthatch, annoyingly, never ever showed it’s self.
At home I checked Nathan’s new field guide to bird sounds and studied the two nuthatch species, pages 314 & 315 which was suggesting me to towards the Red-breasted, but I was still not convinced that it wasn't a variation of the White-breasted. I then went to petersonsonsoundbirds.com <http://petersonsonsoundbirds.com/> where one can easily listen to all of Nathan’s recording—a wealth of information in bird sound. After listening to numerous sounds and calls of each nuthatch I concluded the sound I was hearing was most likely the Red-breasted. Nathan’s new field—Field Guide to Bird Sounds —— comes to the rescue.
