Handed out one info card to a family with a daughter who asked us several questions. Weather: Good weather today for people and birds. Wind and clouds arrived late in the watch. Raptor Observations: SPECIAL NOTE: OBSERVATIONS FROM A SECOND LOCATION (in radio contact) DURING TODAY'S WATCH -- Second location: 50 meters down southeast side of Two Pines. Observation time: 9:00-14:00 MST. Observer: Steve Small. Turkey Vulture 7, Northern Harrier 3, Bald Eagle 1, Sharp shinned Hawk 5, Cooper's Hawk 4, Northern Goshawk 1 adult, Red tailed Hawk 30 (3 dark morph), American Kestrel 10, Peregrine Falcon 3. Total migrators: 64. (This compares with 31 total migrating birds seen from the platform.) Migrating Raptors: Migrators were all over the place today. Some east, some directly overhead, and some west; some beyond naked eye, and some just above us over the ridge. Good thing there were three of us most of the day. Zero migration seen first and last hour of the watch; all were seen between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm MST. Non-Migrating Raptors: Turkey Vultures (3 locals), Bald Eagles (1 local heading due west very high over Power Lines), Unid. Accipiter (1), Red-tailed Hawks (3), American Kestrel (1), and Unid. Falcon Sp (1). Non-raptor Observations: Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay (2), Black-billed Magpie (2), American Crow (14), Common Raven (7), Mountain Chickadee (4), Bushtit (4), Townsend's Solitaire (6), Dark-eyed Junco (Slate-colored) (2), House Finch (2). Dinosaur Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular. Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome. The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of the Rockies from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th. Directions to site: >From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from the south side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the ridge.
