I have had Crossbills since 4/30, flying over my house, sometimes in separate flocks of 4-6. But on 5/22 I counted 22 individuals in 1 flock flying over my house, which surprised me. There are a lot of conifers in my neighborhood. In the last week I have had 3, Green-tailed Towhees, 1, Lark Sparrow, 2, White-crowned Sparrow, Western Wood-Pewee, 1,m. Lazuli Bunting, many Pine Siskin, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Broad-tailed and Black-chinned Hummingbirds, [on one day there were 2,m., and 1,f. Broad-tailed Hummingbird], the next day the female said she was out of here and left when the 2, male Broad-tailed were doing the shuttle flight near her. In 2, separate nest boxes, are 2, separate f. Black-capped Chickadees. This is only the second time I have had 2, separate ones nesting at the same time. My yard is only big enough for 1, pair to nest, but these guys at this point seem to be ok with the situation. One box has 8 eggs. As usual, Red-breasted Nuthatch are in a box with only 4 chicks, compared to their usual number of 5 chicks. Blue Jay are on a nest that is too close to the house door, and 1, American Robin on a nest. 3, separate House Wrens are in separate boxes, the holy terrors of the yard. What amazed me was having Pygmy Nuthatch in my yard almost daily, from 9/29/2017 through 4/24/2018. They stayed so long that I was wondering if they would attempt to nest. Fall time I had up to 16-18 Nuthatch a day, and then the norm was 4-6 per day from Jan./2018 on. Back in the fall of 2017, I had my first Western Scrub-Jay 9/29. Every fall I get these birds in my yard for a month or two. Like in other yards, fall of 2017 brought several Stellar Jays. Happy Spring Birding!!
