This morning I heard, then found, two mountain chickadees in Niwot around my feeders. This is the earliest I have ever had them, as they usually aren’t here until the dead of winter. It might be part of the phenomenon of montane birds moving around because of fires. No juncos yet, though.
Also, in addition to the great dawn blackbird liftoff at Jim Hamm on County Line Road East of Longmont, there is another one, mostly of common grackles with smaller numbers of starlings and redwing blackbirds, bear the Boulder Valley Farm, Boulder Creek on 95th Street between Lookout and Valmont East of Boulder. Multiple thousands of grackles make a great show right before dawn. If you go, then stop by Lookout Road between 95th and 75th to see both golden and bald eagles, who frequent the prairie dog towns there.
