In the 1983 James Lane Birder's Guide to the Rio Grande Valley, he posits that the name changing is some really just some sort of game with points, such as 1 pt for just adding Northern, or changing American to Common etc. up to 5 points for a split (1 previous bird into 2 separate specie) 7 points for a confusing name that sounds like another (Yellow-throats anyone?) AND my favorite 10 points for a name longer than the bird itself, NORTHERN BEARDLESS TYRANNULET!
