The Fountain Creek CBC was held December 14th. We had 29 volunteers on a
day that started out a brisk 11F or so. Even the creeks were partially
frozen, and ponds were mostly fully frozen well into the afternoon.
Volunteers found 77 species and a little over 7000 individual birds.
Chipping Sparrow was a new species for the count and we had high number
records for Townsend's Solitaire, Rock Pigeon, and White-winged Dove.

We had a good mix of Loggerhead and Northern Shrikes at 5 each, and plenty
of Western Meadowlarks and Northern Flickers. Evening Grosbeak, Stellar's
Jays, and Cedar Waxwing turned up for the count after having not been seen
much in recent years. We couldn't find Scaled Quail or Brewer's Blackbirds
that are often seen on the count.

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said
*Gandalf*, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for
them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is
given us.”
