Luke and I set out to bird in and around the Pawnee National Grassland this
morning. One of our main targets was Sharp-tailed Grouse, and we found a
total of four: one fly-over and a group of three just south of the Nebraska
state line.

A few minutes later, while we were still in Colorful Colorado, Luke spotted
three birds that turned out to be Western Bluebirds. Luke noted that the
birds were technically in Nebraska, and decided to create a new eBird list,
then had the presence of mind to check on the status of Western Bluebird in
Nebraska. With just a few clicks and swipes on his phone, he determined
that this sighting might in fact be a first for the state of Nebraska.

We hastily acquired a few documentary photos, posted the list to eBird and
within minutes had confirmation that it was indeed a first state record.
Congrats to Luke!

Birding on the prairies was delightful with sunny skies and no wind.
American Kestrels were moving through in numbers, terrorizing the last few
flocks of Lapland Longspurs as well as the early-arriving Chestnut-collared
and Thick-billed Longspurs. We had great scope views of at least nine
Mountain Plovers, an encouraging count for sure.
