Another nice day to be outside. A few good birds were seen at the banding
station but not captured in our nets today (2 different Prairie Warblers
and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo). Twenty-two species of birds captured including
first of the season Western Kingbird.

A couple more Bullock's Orioles have returned to the same banding
location.
They were a male and female at least 4 years old banded last spring here at
Chico Basin. Something to think about when you have birds nesting; most
birds return to the same area each year to breed. If the habitat
changes/destroyed they will have to search for another suitable habitat to
nest. This may put the bird on the edge of survival. From my Midwest
experience with Yellow Warblers is that they return to the same area to
breed (Particularly the females have high site fidelity). Migrating Yellow
Warblers will still have substantial fat deposits. Where as birds that are
close to their breeding grounds have little to no fat reserves as if they
know they are close to their destination and do not have to carry the extra
"load." A bit of bird behavioral information to stress importance of
conserving habitats.
