Coming back to coccinelle, the issue I see is that currently, only people at Diku/LIP6 have access to that knowledge. I would not be surprised if within 5 years, the project is either dead, because original authors have been moving on new stuff, forked, because the cathedral model is too rigid, or both.
The problem here is how to transfer our knowledge, not really how to write code and release it. The best way we can do it, as research scientists, is to write papers that stay in the long term.
Doing more implies setting up a real transfer team with more people involved and some kind of training. Of course, we are open to such partnership.
