I am interested to hear/read a bit more about this planned extension.

I have got the impression that the type of a SmPL metavariable corresponds to a syntactic element from a source programming language like C directly. I assume that further reuse of SmPL rule names does not need to change this mapping. Is a new SmPL key word needed for improved features?

There are no new keywords. You just use the rule name as a metavariable as shown in the example.
