I have a perfectly silly Cockapoo that we got the Saturday before
Thanksgiving, because the owner was threatening to shoot her. She
gave birth to 6 pups on the 3rd and 4th of December.
She has absolutely stopped nursing. Good thing they are already
enjoying, very much, their kibble. I never knew puppies where
literally chow hounds! LOL
Now for my question. We have one puppy, the one our daughter chose to
keep in fact, who has already learned how to get out of the area where
they are blocked off. I put her in, turn my back, and WHAM, she's
over again. My husband is going to make a whole "puppy" room today,
when he gets home.
Mom is not very nice at all to this pup. She pulls on her ears, she
growls at her, she bites her tail. Is this common? What am I going
to do when the other five start joining in the family fun?
We also have the dad of these pups. He is the calmest, sweetest dog
in the world. Not silly at all. He has definitely changed my mind
about these dogs, because if we had just the mom, I would believe with
all my heart that all Cockapoos are just too silly for words.
We had a Papillon when we got the two new dogs. Then, the Wednesday
before Thanksgiving, we got a blind dachshund who had been left in the
Connecticut River by her "rescuer." It took time for them all to
create a "pack" but now I have a fairly loving one. Second question:
is there any reason at all not to let the pups out NOW to let them
join with the other dogs? I want them as well socialized as possible
when they go to their forever homes (they are all spoken for!). Right
now, when the one gets out, the only dog that causes any trouble is
the MOM -- the rest of them are ok with one. Will adding five more to
the mix be helpful or cause more problems? Should I bring them out
one at a time?
Finally, how old can they be before I can start getting them used to
snow? We live in Western MA, and we don't have much snow now -- all
ice -- but when would it be ok to start their training?
