Yes.  But of course Xcode puts DEBUG=1 in the debug configuration.

Just doing belt and suspenders.

What if the compiler did 

#ifdef NDEBUG

if ( NDEBUG == 1 ) <turn off stuff >

#endif

Just sayin'.
