Why do you draw into a CGLayer rather than a CGImage? I seem to recall that 
CGLayer was discouraged since it never offered any practical performance 
advantages over CGImage, despite all the supposed advantages listed in the 
documentation.

This was something I was told on this list by one of the Apple engineers, but 
that was a long time ago. It could have changed, but the deprecation of those 
APIs suggests that CGLayer is not the way to go.
